World Cup: Wayne Rooney, Cesar Azpilicueta disagree over England’s celebrations

Former England striker Wayne Rooney and ex-Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta expressed differing opinions regarding the Three Lions’ celebrations after their 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup on Monday.

Thomas Tuchel’s team became the first to penetrate the El Tri defense in this tournament, with Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham scoring the opening goal in the 36th minute, followed by another goal less than two minutes later.

Julian Quinones managed to score for the co-hosts, but Jarell Quansah’s red card for the Three Lions just nine minutes into the second half added some tension to the match.

Nevertheless, captain Harry Kane’s penalty restored Tuchel’s team’s two-goal advantage before Kane himself conceded a penalty, leading to a thrilling conclusion.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, the Three Lions secured the victory, handing El Tri only their third competitive loss at the Azteca Stadium. They celebrated their win enthusiastically in the dressing room, with coach Tuchel joining in the festivities.

However, Rooney was not impressed, suggesting that the celebrations were premature.

He said on the BBC (via Express), “I’m a bit more old school. After you win anything… I know you have to enjoy it, but I think it’s a bit too soon.”

In contrast, Azpilicueta said, “As a player, when you have had these kinds of games against a host, this atmosphere, you have to enjoy it. Life is about balance, football is about balance, you have to enjoy it. Now they will recover and be ready for another game.”

Tuchel’s team will face Norway in Miami on Saturday, July 11, for a chance to advance to the semifinals.
