Dutch police on Saturday said they were investigating reports of an explosion overnight at the Israel Centre in the central Dutch town of Nijkerk. There were no reports of injuries and the damage at the site, run by the Christians for Israel charity, was minimal, a police statement posted on social media said. It was not clear if the incident was related to a series of attacks against Jewish sites in Europe since the war in Iran. Police said there had been no arrests and appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Cuba began releasing prisoners from its jails on Friday just hours after its communist-run government announced a sweeping amnesty coinciding with the most intense pressure campaign applied by the U.S. in decades. More than 2,000 prisoners are slated to be released as part of Cuba’s state-run media on Thursday called a “sovereign and humanitarian” gesture, the largest such amnesty in 10 years. The U.S. said it was closely monitoring whether those it deems to be political prisoners would be among the liberated “It is unclear how many, if any, political prisoners will be released,” the spokesperson said. “We continue to…
Iraq closed the Shalamcheh border crossing with Iran after airstrikes on the Iranian side killed an Iraqi citizen, security sources said on Saturday. The sources said at least five Iraqis were seriously wounded in the strikes, which hit a passenger reception area on the Iranian side. Iraqi police recovered the body of a man, while the wounded were taken to hospital, most in critical condition. Iraq’s border authorities ordered the crossing closed to trade and travellers, the authorities said in a statement.
China’s cyberspace regulator issued draft regulations on Friday to oversee the development online of digital humans, requiring clear labelling and banning services that could mislead children or fuel addiction. The Cyberspace Administration of China’s proposed rules would require prominent “digital human” labels on all virtual human content and prohibit digital humans from providing “virtual intimate relationships” to those under 18, according to rules published for public comment until May 6. The draft regulations would also ban the use of other people’s personal information to create digital humans without consent, or using virtual humans to bypass identity verification systems, reflecting Beijing’s…
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on lawmakers to pass key legislation next week to avert a funding crisis, help Ukraine fight the war against Russia, and enact key reforms required for European Union accession. Due to lagging reforms and slow legislative progress in late 2025 and early 2026, Ukraine missed deadlines to unlock billions from its key lenders, economists said. With the need for external financing standing at $52 billion this year – equivalent to around a quarter of annual economic output – the budget situation is desperate. “I have a list of key draft laws that are critical for securing…
Gladys Khoza had missed being able to see her family. Not because they couldn’t visit, but because the 84-year-old had vision problems. Now that has changed. Khoza is one of 133 people whose sight was restored during a “marathon” of free cataract surgeries conducted by doctors in South Africa at two hospitals over two weekends last month. “Wow!” a delighted Khoza whispered as a nurse peeled back a bandage a day after her operation, and the world came back into view. “Can you see me?” the nurse asked. “Very well,” Khoza replied, a big grin on her face. Patients in South Africa’s public…

Valarie Wairimu has no time to rest during break time at Kenya’s Greenland Girls School. The teenager grabs a snack and goes straight to what makes this school unique: its nursery. The 19-year-old is met by a team of nannies who have been watching her baby, Kayden, before she feeds him between classes. The school is the only educational institute in Kenya dedicated to teenage mothers and cares for many of their children. For its 310 students and more than 80 children from infants to toddlers, Greenland represents a second chance at school that is free from stigma and, experts say, a…
Africa’s fintech giants are already regional, but regulation isn’t When Nigerian fintech companies expand across Africa, the technology often travels easily. Payments APIs integrate quickly, merchants understand the products, customers adopt digital wallets and online checkout tools without much friction. Regulation, however, does not travel as easily. A fintech that is licensed in Nigeria must often repeat the entire licensing process when entering another African market, navigating new capital requirements, compliance rules, reporting standards, and supervisory expectations. The result is a fragmented regulatory landscape that many fintech founders say slows expansion across the continent. This challenge sits at the centre…
