US may have struck Iranian girls’ school after using outdated targeting data, sources say
A strike on an Iranian girls’ school that killed scores of children may be the result of U.S. use of outdated targeting data, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday, providing new details about what would rank among the worst cases of civilian casualties in decades of U.S. conflicts. Reuters first reported on Thursday that an ongoing, internal U.S. military investigation showed U.S. forces were likely responsible for the strike on the girls’ school in Minab. Video surfaced that experts say appears to show a U.S. Tomahawk missile striking the area. But exactly how the tragedy unfolded has remained unclear and…
Jose Antonio Kast was sworn in as Chile’s president on Wednesday, ushering in the country’s sharpest shift to the right in decades as voters, alarmed by rising insecurity, backed a broader conservative turn sweeping parts of Latin America. In his first address to the nation, Kast described a country riddled with organized crime and weak finances and painted his administration as an emergency government aimed at fixing those problems. “They’ve handed us a country in conditions worse than we imagined,” Kast said, addressing a crowd of thousands of supporters who gathered outside La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago on Wednesday…
An Italian military base in Iraqi Kurdistan was struck by a missile overnight though no injuries were reported, the Italian defence ministry said on Thursday. “A missile hit our base in Erbil. There are no casualties or injuries among the Italian personnel. They are all fine,” the ministry said on X shortly after midnight on Thursday. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in a separate message on X that Italian military personnel had taken shelter in a bunker and all were “well and safe”. Italy has around 300 troops in Erbil, working on training Kurdish security forces, the defence ministry said…
President Donald Trump sought to reassure Americans during a trip to Kentucky and Ohio on Wednesday that rising gasoline prices linked to the Iran war were temporary, as fellow Republicans worried that the increases are stoking voter anxiety about the economy. Trump’s campaign trip was his first since the start of the U.S.-Israeli military operation in Iran on February 28. It offered him a chance to sharpen his economic message and tout his record ahead of November’s midterm elections, when his fellow Republicans will be defending narrow majorities in both chambers of the U.S. Congress. On his first stop, at a plant…
South Korea to discipline officials over delays in recovering remains of Jeju Air crash victims
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has ordered tough disciplinary action against officials responsible for delays in recovering the remains of victims from the 2024 Jeju Air crash that killed 179 people, his office said Thursday. Lee had expressed regret and offered condolences after an additional probe into the crash found that only nine body parts belonging to seven victims had been discovered more than a year after the accident, a presidential aide told a briefing. The president had instructed authorities to determine why those remains, along with 648 personal items and 155 pieces of aircraft debris, were left unattended…
South Africa’s government called in the new U.S. ambassador to the country to explain himself over “undiplomatic remarks,” foreign affairs minister Ronald Lamola said on Wednesday. Conservative activist and writer Leo Brent Bozell III arrived in Pretoria as U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy last month. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have soured during Trump’s second term in office. Trump has criticised South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment policies to address the legacy of centuries of racial inequality and its genocide case at the World Court against Israel, a close U.S. ally. Israel strongly rejects South Africa’s genocide case over its military campaign…
