The critically acclaimed drama series “Shogun” has dominated the Emmy award nominations announced on Wednesday, earning an impressive 25 nods and transporting viewers back to early 17th-century Japan.

The series, adapted from James Clavell’s historical fiction novel, has captivated audiences with its portrayal of the intricate and deadly court politics of feudal Japan.

“The Bear” set a new record in the comedy category with 23 nominations, surpassing “Only Murders in the Building,” which garnered 21 nods. In the limited or anthology series section, “True Detective: Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster, led the pack with 19 nominations.

Nominees were revealed in a live-streamed ceremony from Los Angeles. Final-round voting for the 76th Emmy Awards will take place next month, with the ceremony scheduled for September 15.

“Shogun” received widespread acclaim for its remarkable cast of Japanese heroes and villains, despite its heavy use of subtitles. Lead actress Anna Sawai and lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada, both nominated, expressed their gratitude for the recognition. “It was a great opportunity to share our culture with the world. I hope this will be a stepping stone for the next generation,” Sanada said in an e-mailed statement to AFP.

While “Shogun” is a favorite across this year’s drama categories, it faces stiff competition from the final season of Netflix’s “The Crown” and Apple’s “The Morning Show,” starring Jennifer Aniston. Despite its numerous nominations, “Shogun” surprisingly did not secure a nod for Cosmo Jarvis, who portrayed the marooned English sailor framing the show’s narrative.

With two more seasons already in development, “Shogun” continues to be a powerful contender in the television landscape, showcasing the rich and complex history of Japan while breaking new ground in the industry.
