Oil Prices Fall For Fourth Day As Brent Slips Below $94 On US-Iran Peace Hopes

Crude oil prices declined for a fourth consecutive trading session on Thursday as growing expectations of a diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran conflict eased concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies.

Brent crude oil, the international oil benchmark, fell 0.85% to $93.82 per barrel during early trading, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) declined 1.36% to $86.92 per barrel.

The latest losses followed Wednesday’s sharp selloff, when both benchmarks plunged more than 8% as investors reassessed the risk of prolonged supply disruptions in the Middle East.

Oil prices had previously been supported by concerns that military tensions involving Iran could restrict crude exports from the region, particularly shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

However, expectations of renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran have reduced the geopolitical risk premium that helped push crude prices above $100 per barrel earlier in the week.

Market sentiment has also shifted following the US midterm elections, with investors assessing whether the political developments could influence Washington’s approach to the conflict.

Meanwhile, improving crude shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have helped ease immediate concerns about supply availability.

The waterway remains one of the world’s most important oil transportation routes, connecting major Middle Eastern producers with international markets.

Beyond geopolitical developments, expectations of rising global oil supplies are also weighing on prices.

JPMorgan estimates that the global oil market recorded a surplus of approximately 1.1 million barrels per day in September, increasing to 1.4 million barrels per day in October.

The figures suggest that supply growth has begun to outpace demand, adding downward pressure on crude prices as concerns over potential disruptions ease.

Nevertheless, the outlook remains uncertain because any renewed escalation in the Middle East could disrupt exports and trigger another increase in oil prices.

    Implications for Nigeria

The decline in crude prices presents mixed implications for Nigeria, which depends heavily on petroleum exports for foreign exchange earnings and government revenue.

A sustained fall in international oil prices could reduce the value of Nigeria’s crude exports and weaken revenue projections, particularly if prices move closer to the benchmark adopted in the federal budget.

Lower crude prices could also affect the earnings outlook for upstream oil producers operating in Nigeria, especially companies with significant exposure to international benchmark prices.

However, reduced global oil prices could ease petroleum-product costs for domestic consumers and businesses, depending on exchange-rate movements, refining costs and market pricing conditions.

For investors, attention will remain on developments in US-Iran negotiations, oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and changes in global supply-demand conditions.

The direction of crude prices in the coming sessions will depend largely on whether diplomatic progress continues and whether supply growth remains sufficient to offset geopolitical risks.
