Why I didn’t celebrate goal against Nigeria – Poland star, Wiśniewski

Poland central defender Przemysław Wiśniewski has clarified the reason behind his subdued celebration after scoring a late equaliser in Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw against Nigeria in Warsaw.

The defender stated that the moment unfolded too rapidly for a premeditated celebration also citing tiredness.

Wiśniewski executed a long-range shot in the final minutes, successfully beating Nigeria’s goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to equalize after Paul Onuachu’s penalty, thus securing a draw in a closely fought international friendly.

This goal represented his first for the national team since his debut against the Netherlands in September 2025 during a FIFA World Cup qualifier.

In his post-match comments, the defender acknowledged that his understated celebration stemmed from both fatigue and surprise at the execution of the shot.

“I didn’t have a planned celebration because I don’t score often,” he told reporters through Przegladsportowy. “I just struck it, and it went in – pure instinct.”

The 27-year-old further mentioned that the physical exertion during the closing moments also affected his response.

“I was fatigued in the 90th minute, so I wasn’t inclined to run around; I merely raised my hands. I’m pleased to have scored such a first goal.”

Wiśniewski also conveyed his uncertainty about being able to replicate such an achievement in the future, indicating that he does not frequently practice similar shots during training.

“I don’t know if I’ll be able to repeat it soon. I don’t score shots like that in training,” he remarked.

The Super Eagles will be looking to deliver a stronger performance as they prepare to face Portugal in their upcoming international friendly.
