Arsenal slumped to Man City in a 2-1 defeat at the Etihad yesterday

Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat away to Manchester City at the Etihad has inevitably shifted the mood around the title race, but it has not ended it.

Far from it. If anything, it has sharpened the narrative into something even more compelling. Arsenal remain ahead, still in control of their own destiny, yet the margins now feel razor thin and the pressure unmistakably intense.

This was a game defined by those margins. City were clinical when it mattered, Arsenal competitive throughout, but the decisive moments fell the home side’s way. It is often said that title races are decided not by dominance, but by small details, and this match was a perfect illustration of that truth. One moment stands out in particular. Eberechi Eze striking the post in a recent key moment that could have swung momentum serves as a reminder of how narrow the gap is between success and frustration at this level. Arsenal have lived on the right side of those moments for much of the season, but at the Etihad, they fell just short.

Despite the defeat, Arsenal are still ahead in the table. That is the critical point. However, the equation is simple and unforgiving. Should City win their next match against Burnley, they will move level on points and ahead on goal difference. That looming possibility adds a layer of urgency to every remaining Arsenal fixture. The lead is real, but fragile.

Mikel Arteta struck a tone of measured frustration after the game. He spoke about fine margins, about competing well but not taking key chances, and about the need to respond. There was no sense of panic in his words, but there was an acknowledgment that Arsenal must now be almost flawless. His message was clear. The performance was not far off, but at this stage of the season, being close is not enough.

One of the defining challenges for Arsenal now is not just City, but the calendar. The looming Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid adds a layer of complexity that could shape the title race. Atletico are one of the most disciplined and tactically demanding teams in Europe, and that tie will require total focus. Balancing that with the intensity of a domestic title run-in is one of the toughest tasks any team can face.

Looking at Arsenal’s remaining league fixtures, each carries its own narrative and potential difficulty.

Running parallel to all of this is City’s relentless consistency. They have been here before, they know how to close out a title race, and their squad depth gives them an advantage when fixtures pile up. That is why the Burnley game feels so significant. If they win, the psychological balance could tilt, even if only slightly.

And yet, Arsenal are still in front. That fact should not be lost in the noise. This is not a team clinging on, but one that has earned its position through sustained excellence. The defeat at the Etihad was a setback, but not a collapse.

The key now is response. Arteta’s side must show that they can absorb disappointment and immediately refocus. They have done it before this season. They will need to do it again.

What makes this race so compelling is that it feels genuinely on edge. There is no clear margin for error for either side. One missed chance, one deflection, one moment like a shot hitting the post can change everything.

Arsenal’s title hopes are still very much alive, but they now exist in a space where perfection might be required. City are waiting, ready to capitalise on any slip. The next few weeks will define everything.

It is going to be tight.
