FIFA has formally accepted the mass resignations of key officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Nigerian government, the NFF and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to reform football administration in the country.
The development followed a high-level meeting at FIFA House in Zurich, Switzerland, on Tuesday, where representatives of FIFA, CAF, the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the NFF discussed the ongoing leadership transition and plans to restructure Nigerian football.
The meeting agreed that talks should continue to develop a clear reform roadmap covering the short, medium and long term.
The aim is to build a more inclusive and properly organised NFF, with an environment that promotes stability, transparency and effective administration.
The parties also agreed that any reform process must follow the relevant FIFA, CAF and NFF statutes, regulations and governance principles.
The Nigerian delegation was led by NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko. He was joined by NSC Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade; former NFF President and former FIFA Council Member Amaju Pinnick, OFR; NFF Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme; and NFF Director of Legal Services, Okey Obi, Esq.
CAF Second Vice-President Kurt Okraku and FIFA Director of Member Associations for Africa, Gelson Fernandes, also took part in the meeting.
Speaking after the meeting, Dikko described the engagement as an important step towards rebuilding the administration of Nigerian football.
“Mutual engagement among the National Sports Commission, the NFF administration and the Confederation of African Football is ongoing with FIFA on the comprehensive reforms of Nigeria football, including agreeing a roadmap going forward in accordance with the relevant rules, regulations and Statutes,” Dikko said.
He added that Nigeria’s football administration would emerge stronger from the process.
“There is no doubt Nigeria Football will emerge much better and properly-structured after the conclusion of this process.”
The FIFA meeting comes at an important time for Nigerian football following the recent departures of senior NFF officials and the suspension of the federation’s planned electoral process.
With FIFA, CAF, the NSC and the NFF now involved in the consultations, attention will turn to the structure, responsibilities and timeline of the reform process.
One of the key priorities will be to ensure that the new structure has broad support from football stakeholders and provides stable and accountable leadership.
The outcome of the Zurich meeting is also expected to influence the next stage of the NFF’s leadership transition, including the future electoral process and the emergence of a new leadership structure.
For Nigerian football, the major challenge now is to turn the high-level talks into practical reforms that will improve administration, strengthen accountability and restore confidence in the country’s football leadership.
